Last year at this time- 8 boats had docked and signed in overnight--- as of this evening- 54 so far this year!!!!!!!!!! From Sweeden, Germany, Bahama, Alaska, Florida, and Kansas, just to name a few....... Bob Weichbrodt and the McDonalds Corp plan to deliver two huge flag poles to the village for the dock....... The fire dept has voted to purchase an American flag pole and flag for the dock area...... Assemblyman Bob Oaks has donated a NYS Flag for the dock.... Our new neighbors, The Amish, have donated several plantings for the canal bank butterfly and hummingbird area.... Lock masters John and Floyd have planted wonderful flower gardens at Lock 27...... Eric Lewis and the Class of 2017 have planted a Peppermint Garden on the Canal Bank.... Momma Duck has finally kicked her babies into the water so the floating docks could be installed ... Our canal area has been chosen for new National Heritage Corridor Signs.... And finally, the PATHWAY TO HEAVEN- the concrete approach- has been poured by Nicoletta Construction and Mike and the village crew have added curbing and backfill.... the walkway/ approach is absolutely fantastic, and now that the grounds have dried up, the village crews have been able to really clean up the grounds by mowing and hauling away junk...... Picnic tables and benches will be installed after Peppermint Days..... Les and Mary Ann Bartley have joined the "Meet and Greet" crew on Thursday evenings, and the famous Mr. Bridger can't wait to be assigned somewhere... Rick Ross and his DDOS crew are mowing Dobbins park and assisting in weedwacking the canal bank...Mark DeCracker "borrowed" special weedwackers with saw blades so he and Bob Stopper could climb banks and cut down summack.... Bob and Denise Darcangelis have been pulling weeds, and Jack McCranels has done plenty of extra weedwacking......Most of you know that Mr. and Mrs. John Paliotti have been managing the flower garden in front of the Elem school- well Phyllis has agreed to help head up the weed crew on the canal bank.... A sort of glitch has slowed down progress on the installation of the floating kayak/canoe launch, but as soon as a handicap access ramp can be designed and installed, all will be well .... Chuck, Bob, and our fabulous firemen have received wonderful "blogs of praise" from boaters. ....Four boats (4) from Baldwinsville plan to be here next Sat evening for the fireworks!!!!! Es Kay Yards in Brewerton has our rackcards and map on display..... A poster of our village is on display at the Tourist Center at the Windmill! .... Geneva On The Lake has our Village rack cards on display..... Information about our village and waterfront has been updated- boating and tourist guides go to press on September 1!!!!!!!!!!! .... In the works- A possible partnership with Wayne County tourism.....ALSO: a possible flotilla from Seneca Falls for Pumpking Palooza to close out the boating season!!!!!!!!! My prediction: 250 boats overnight and 1000 boating tourists for the 2011 season ..... All is well- BUT SO ARE THE WILD MORNING GLORY plants, and they are beginninjg to choke out our great perrenials and Peppermint.... This coming Tuesday evening, July 5 from 6:00 till 7:00, could you possibly join us at the canal bank and help kill those weeds before they kill our flowers and shrubs ...... Please share this info and the pictures with any and all---- Bob Stopper
Hello all! Happy Spring!
The LMSP would like to make you aware of scheduled community events and happenings that will be taking place over the next few months. This is also a reminder that May has officially been proclaimed by both the Village and Town Boards as "Clean Up, Fix Up, and Paint Up Month". This promotion encourages all Lyons property owners to take pride in community and pride of ownership. Spruce up so we'll all look good for summer visitors!

To coincide with the "Clean Up, Fix Up, and Paint Up Month" promotion, the LMSP is awarding "Thumbs Up!" certificates to those Lyons neighbors and businesses that show pride of community and ownership by maintaining their residence or business to reflect their pride. This is one way all Lyonites can say “Thank you!” for making Lyons a great place to live. Only Lyons' residents may nominate a fellow Lyons neighbor or business for “Thumbs Up!” recognition and the person (or persons) nomination of a fellow resident or business will remain anonymous. You can nominate someone by contacting the Lyons Main Street Program at 315-871-4220 or via email. Know someone that always keeps their property neat and tidy? Has a neighbor recently painted the trim on the house or planted a new flower bed? Nominate them for a “Thumbs Up!” certificate. All certificates are hand delivered and as a further acknowledgement, a complete listing of all Thumbs Up award winners will be publicly listed in early June.

To make Lyons look its patriotic best, the LMSP is offering quantity discounts on USA made bunting for dressing Lyons up for summer. Bunting is a traditional way to greet summer visitors and the quantity pricing lowers with the more units ordered. The LMSP will be happy to coordinate the purchase and distribute as they come in. A three stripe pleated flag (#PFF-318 - red white and blue stripes - 18" X 36", cotton w/ hanging grommets) is as low as $3.50 each with an order of 24 or more and the five stripe (#PFF-501, with stars - same size, poly blend w/ hanging grommets) are $4.50 each with an order over 6 units. The cost of shipping will be split among those participating. They may be viewed at this link - http://www.quinnflags.com/products.asp?CatId=6&SubCatId=35&CategoryName=Pleated+Patriotic+Fans

Saturday, May 16th "Clean Up and Fix Up at the Hotchkiss Building" Lyons Heritage Society and Friends of the Hotchkiss will be cleaning, tidying and planting! Pizza and beverages. 5:00 - 8:00 - - - bring a friend to catch up on the latest gossip while you make a difference!

Thursday, May 19 @ 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Dock area clean up. At noon, volunteers will be treated to grilled hot dogs and homemade macaroni and cheese at the Lyons Fire house. Please bring your gloves, rakes, and shovels (make sure your name is on your tools!) and drag along a friend to yak with while you're making a difference!

Saturday May 21st The Anne Hotchkiss Residence Auction. Preview at 9:00 am. Go online to view items, Reynolds Auction House.

Saturday, May 21st - Hometown Hollywood, 7 PM - - - American Idol Emcee Ryan Seacrest wasn't available so the organizers have tapped vociferous Terry VanStean to fill in. This event is sponsored by the LHS Senior Class of 2011 and proceeds benefit the "Senior Lock-in" night. Pre-auditioned performers will do their best to win the top prize of $500.00 ($200.00 2nd and $100.00 3rd) with the ultimate winner being determined by the audience. Earl Buchanan Auditorium, Lyons Central School, 7 pm. Tickets are $8 and $5 for senior citizens.

Monday, May 30th - American Legion Memorial Day Parade at 9:30 am. Parade route begins and ends at the Village Square Park with a stop to honor the Veterans at the Town of Lyons Rural Cemetery. Local Girl Scouts place bouquets on veteran's graves. Patriotic and Veteran's entries are encouraged and line up begins at 9 am at the Village Square Park.

Beginning June 6th it will begin to look a lot like Peppermint Days as the Lyons Main Street Program kicks off the "Paint the Village Peppermint" decorating contest for businesses and residences. Last year brought out the craftier side of business windows and homes alike with clever decorative representations. Last year's 1st place home owner was The Pullen Residence at 69 Cherry Street and the 1st place business went to the Wayne County employees that decorated the windows at the Park Bakery Building.

Wednesday, June 8th - LMS/LHS Spring Concert and awards. Thanks to the Staff and Management of Studebaker's Grille for an outstanding job with the delicious buffet dinner. When we were caught short on seating (thanks to additional last-minute ticket sales), banquet room servers Sue and Ashley improvised beautifully - our gratitude to them. Our sincere thanks go out to the following businesses, organizations and individuals that helped make our second Valentine's Day dinner dance a success: Progressive Graphics and Printing, Lyons National Bank, The Museum of Wayne County History, B & D Globe, Dobbins Drugs and The Buck at Old Lyons Hardware, Lyons Youth Ambassadors and the LCSD "Hairspray!" production team, Stephanie Knarr of Magick Entertainment, Denise Eaton of Photos by Denise, Priscilla Paliotti and Globe Travel II, Dr. Randolph Mitchell and Lisa Scheltz, the Lyons Community Center, the Lyons Fire Department, Bone Appetit, Embee's Cafe, Glenn Wasman and A Canal Village Shop (opening late spring), Manktelow Farms, the Dennis Kehoes, the Ernie Evangelists, the Stuart Smarts, the Bruce Lubitows, the David Burnhams, Scott Bailey, Alicia Linzy and the Red and White Affair Committee.

The tables were decorated with alternating red and white napkins and table cloths and at each place setting was a program of the evening's events, a "Visit Historical Village of Lyons" promotional pocket card, postcard and red Lyons logo window sticker. The new postcard, based on the promotional pocket card (and sponsored by Dobbins Drugs and Old Lyons Hardware), will be available for free at every Lyons festival encouraging visitors to send greetings around the world from Lyons. The Red and White Couple award went to Jennifer Dunn and Robert Goatseay for their angelic white and devilishly red costumes. Bob Paliotti won the 50/50 drawing and was kind enough to donate a portion of his winnings back to the program - do something fun with the rest of your winnings, Mr. Bob! The Live Auction featured a John Deere Pedal Tractor donated by Brian Manktelow of Manktelow Farms and was auctioned by LMSP Board Member, Keith Bridger. Keith presided over a bidding war that took the winning bid to $215.00 - many thanks all around. JoAnne Greco sold the most tickets, Denise Eaton took photographs of Red and White guests in front of a backdrop set up for keepsake portraits and Stephanie Knarr got the guests on the dance floor with the first song "The Peppermint Twist" (Lyons' adopted "anthem") and kept them there all evening long.

The proceeds from the evening will further the Lyons Main Street Program's goal of attracting new businesses, enhancing the visitor experience of our downtown business district as well as drawing new visitor and tourism dollars. The LMSP is actively seeking citizens of Lyons (from the business, education, organizational, religious and private sector) to assist with the planning, development and implementation of promotional campaigns, community improvement volunteer projects, festivals and events aimed at promoting and marketing Lyons. In questionable economic times, part of the solution may be found by banding together to take care of our neighbors first.

Working together now means Lyons will be scrubbed and ready for business as the economy rebounds. The LMSP is asking you to volunteer for a clean-up or planting project or one of the planned community festivals. The next major event sponsored by the LMSP is PumpkinPalooza, a Lyons-only harvest event, which has been scheduled for October 22nd. PumpkinPalooza was established two years ago as a day of promotion and fund raising for all local businesses (including home based businesses) and organizations. We encourage Lyonites to participate in whatever way they can (from decorating your home PumpkinPalooza style to volunteering for your favorite organizations fund raising booth) to celebrate the harvest season. The Lyons Youth Ambassadors' Great Pearl Street Pumpkin Race, the PumpkinPalooza Coffin Race, Pumpkin Butt, Bluegrass/Folk Music concerts and the PumpkinPalooza Costume Parade brought many festival-goers to Lyons to experience our own home-grown pumpkin fun! Call the LMSP for further details 315-871-4220

Again, many thanks to those that support our revitalization efforts. The LMSP is working to build working partnerships with those that know Lyons is someplace special - someplace out of a Norman Rockwell painting - someplace that should celebrate its history while acknowledging the future - someplace we love to call home. See you at Red and White 2012 - Studebaker's Grille, February 11, 2012!!!
The Peppermint Winter Wonderland Lighting of the Park will take place on Saturday, November 27th beginning at 5:30 with the LHS Jazz Vocal Ensemble, the lighting ceremony at 6 pm and, of course, a visit from the fat man in red to round out the evening. The Dog Pound mobile hot foods wagon and vendor booths will offer holiday treats and again this year, the Lyons National Bank will host guests in the grand lobby of their headquarters at 35 William Street for cocoa and cookies to ward off winter's chill. The Newark Youth Choir will perform for those gathered at the bank. Speaking of cookies, as one of the first events for Peppermint Winter Wonderland, the Lyons Public Library is sponsoring a Gingerbread House decorating contest for all ages where the entries will be auctioned off to benefit the library. There is no registration or entry fee however, entries must be delivered to the library by noon, Monday, November 29th. Winners will be determined by the number of "vote" tickets each entry receives (voting tickets are purchased 5 for one dollar). For a complete list of rules, contact the library at 315-946-9262 or by email at lyonslibrary@owwl.org.

The Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade will step off at 5 pm, Saturday, December 4th for its second annual trip through downtown Lyons. The theme for this years parade is "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and the LMSP encourages creativity and humor when groups or individuals are putting together their entry for this years parade. The LMSP hopes to see lots of lights and fun holiday music (think the Whos in Whoville from the movie version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas!) as well as unusual lit mobile and vehicular entries. Choral groups are encouraged to light candles or deck themselves out with battery operated lights and walk the parade route singing songs of holiday jubilation. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Overall Entry and the Best Use of Lights. This year, the Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade will have a "Holiday Hound-dog" contingency where the family pooch can be adorned with lights and walked on a leash or ensconced on a home-made, wagon-based "float". A prize for the merriest of mutts will be awarded to the best canine entry. Interested groups or individuals may register for free by contacting the LMSP offices. Come early to shop in downtown Lyons or at the Museum of Wayne County History's Holiday Boutique (Dec. 3rd-5th). Have a bite to eat at the Dog Pound at the park and stay for the fun.

The Ohmann Theatre will present a special holiday showing of The Sound of Music at 2 pm on Sunday, December 12th for a general admission of $3.00 per person. Come dressed as your favorite character or line from Sound of Music song (i.e. "Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes"- use your imagination!) and singing along with the music is more than encouraged. Bring the family or gather up some of your friends and join us for what is sure to be a seasonal treat.

Two brand new events have been added to this years line-up of holiday festivities and the first pays homage to our French namesake, Lyon. Each year Lyon hosts the "Fete des Lumieres" (Festival of Lights) and all of their businesses and residences go all out with lighting to brighten up the cold, dark winter skies. Beginning December 3rd and continuing through December 12th, the LMSP is asking all Lyons residents, regardless of religious convictions, to light up their home for those 10 days with either spotlights washing their home or business, candles in the windows, lights in trees, on houses, luminaries lining your sidewalks and drive - be clever! The idea is that Lyons will begin a new tradition that can be built upon each year and by starting this year, Lyons can get the first year of building under its belt. The goal is to draw our regional neighbors to come to Lyons to see the lights while encouraging them to shop in Lyons' stores and eat in Lyons' restaurants. The French have been building this festival since 1852 (yes, eighteen-fifty-two!) and it has progressed to what it is today - a highly technical display using all types of theatrical lighting sources splashing across buildings both old and new - it brings tourists from all over the world to see the dramatic displays of color and light.
